Canopic jars were intended to preserve the soft inner organs removed from the body during mummification. Some of the finest are those in Egyptian alabaster inscribed for high officials of the 26th Dynasty. This example is from the set of four for the general Ptahirdis, son of the lady Ankhnesites.
