The ibis was regarded as an incarnation of the god Thoth. In the Late Period and the Ptolemaic Period, the birds were mummified en masse and placed in catacombs. At the same time many votive statues like this one were manufactured. The ibis is shown striding. The legs were cast separately and are now missing. The place where the legs were attached to the body is preserved.
