The Global Egyptian Museum

This statue, made of white marble, is a portrait of the Empress Julia Longina (Domitia), wife of Emperor Domitian (AD 81-96). 

She is portrayed with a full face and aquiline nose. Her abundant hair is braided and tied at the back of her skull but spills out in a wreath of tight curls that frames her face. 

This head was discovered in 1900 at the bottom of the central shaft of the Rotunda in the Catacombs of Kom Al-Shuqafa, together with four other portrait statues. One of the other four portraits was identified as a priest of Serapis.

The Emperor Domitian was assassinated because his authoritarian rule was so hated. Because of this, it is highly unlikely that the head of his wife would have been publicly exhibited after his death, but just how it came to be lying at the bottom of the Rotunda is not known.

Cette statue de marbre blanc est un buste de l'impératrice Julia Longina (Domitia), épouse de l'empereur Domitien (81-96 après Jésus-Christ).

Ce buste la représente avec un visage complet et un nez aquilin. Son abondante chevelure est tressée et attachée à l'arrière de sa nuque mais de larges boucles viennent tout de même encadrer son visage.

Cette tête fut découverte en 1900 au fond du fût central de la Rotonde dans les Catacombes de Kom Al-Shuqafa. A ses côtés se trouvaient quatre autres bustes dont l'un fut identifié comme étant celui d'un prêtre de Sérapis.

L'empereur Domitien fut assassiné en raison de son règne autoritaire qui lui valut d'être haï. Dès lors, il est fort peu probable que ce buste de son épouse ait été exposé en public après sa mort. Toutefois, la façon dont il est arrivé au fond de la Rotonde demeure encore un mystère.

صورها التمثال بوجه مكتمل وأنف نسري؛ وقد ضفر شعرها الكثيف وربط عند مؤخرة الرأس، ولكنه ينتشر في إكليل كبير بتموجات مشدودة تحيط بوجهها. 

واكتشف هذا الرأس عام 1900م في قاع البئر المركزي وسط القاعة المستديرة في سرداب مقابر كوم الشقافة، مع أربعة تماثيل تصويرية أخرى؛ أمكن التعرف على أحدها بأنه لواحد من كهنة المعبود سيرابيس.

وكان دوميشيان حاكما متسلطا وممقوتا للغاية، فاغتيل في النهاية. ولهذا الاعتبار، فإن من المستبعد جدا أن يكون رأس زوجته قد عرض على الملأ من بعد موته؛ وإن ظل أمر وصول هذه الرأس إلى قاع الروتاندا، غامضا.
