Description
Plaster masks such as this one were normally placed on a reclining mummy. The masks were shaped in molds. After the plaster dried, it was painted in different colors. Charcoal was used to paint the hair black and gold was used for the jewelry, such as earrings, necklaces, and diadems, a type of crown. There are many examples where the entire mask was gilded. The hairstyles of the masks usually imitated those of the imperial court. The wide-eyed portraits of often-young people, their expressive features are brimful by the still-fresh colors, are very moving.

Les masques de plâtre tels que celui-ci étaient placés sur la momie. Ils étaient façonnés dans des moules. Une fois secs, ils étaient peints de differents couleurs.
