Description
The lioness was the sacred animal of Sekhmet of Memphis and her name simply means the "Powerful," which is appropriate in view of her destructive aspects. The gilded statue shows the goddess Sekhmet with the body of a woman and the head of a lioness. She is seated on a small, low-backed throne on a rectangular base. The goddess wears a three-part wig with the sun disk on top and a long tunic that leaves her feet visible at the base of the statue. Her right arm rests on her knees, while her left hand is raised. It originally held an object that is now lost.
