Book of the Dead

Book of the Dead.jpg

Modern name for a collection of mortuary texts from the New Kingdom and later, which evolved from much older collections of spells. The Egyptian name was the 'Book of Going Forth by Day'. The Book of the Dead contains about 200 spells. Parts of it describe the underworld with all its dangers and the obstacles that had to be overcome there. The spells were usually written on papyrus rolls, but also on tomb objects and mummy bandages.
