The Two Lands which made up Egypt according to many texts were also called Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. Upper Egypt refers to the region to the south of Memphis, corresponding to the Nile valley, although strictly speaking the oases in the western desert also belong to Upper Egypt. According to tradition, the Two Lands were first united by King Menes.
