In ancient texts, Egypt is frequently referred to as 'the Two Lands', as well as Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. Lower Egypt refers to the region to the north of the old residence Memphis, roughly corresponding to the Nile Delta. According to tradition, the Two Lands were first united by King Menes.
