Malachite

Malachite.jpg

Green coloured copper ore (a type of copper carbonate), used in Egypt almost exclusively for making eye paint. It has been found in numerous tombs from the predynastic period till at least the 19th Dynasty in the form of powder and as the raw material from which the powder is made. Occasionally malachite was also used as inlay in jewellery. It was mined in Sinai and the eastern desert.
