Location in Middle Egypt near present-day Miniya where the 18th Dynasty king Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten founded a new city as residence at a place which had never previously been occupied and which belonged to no god. In antiquity this city was called Akhetaten. The entire period and its art is usually referred to by the modern name of the area.
