Description
Cylinder seals were very popular in the Early Dynastic Period in Egypt, and were superseded by flat seals before the end of the Old Kingdom. The most common cylinder seal was a seal of office. This cylinder seal, made of steatite, has an inscription in three columns and may have served as an amulet. The hieroglyphs have only been cursorily carved and have symbolic rather than any other value. The seal is pierced along its length.
