Kohl was used as eye paint and was extracted from malachite (green copper ore), or galena (dark gray lead ore). Kohl was ground on slate palettes as early as the pre-dynastic period and was used to paint the eyelids for both cosmetic and hygienic reasons. It was either prepared as a compact mass of the finely-ground material made into a paste, or as powder. 

This kohl pot is in the shape of a hedgehog and has a wooden kohl stick. It once belonged to a household of a woman during the New Kingdom and was prepared as a piece of art showing this animal. The figure of the hedgehog with its spines could then act to protect the eyes from any harm, when it contained the kohl for painting the lashes and lids.

Le khôl était utilisé pour maquiller les yeux; il était extrait à partir de malachite (minerai en cuivre vert) ou de galène (minerai en plomb gris foncé). Le khôl est moulu sur des palettes en ardoise dès la période pre-dynastique. Il était utilisé pour maquiller les paupières pour des raisons esthétiques mais également hygiéniques. Il était soit préparé comme masse compacte à partir du matérial finement moulu et transformé en pâte soit en poudre. 

Ce pot de khôl en forme d'hérisson, comporte un bâton de khôl en bois. Il appartenait à une femme pendant le nouvel empire et a été confectionné comme objet d'art. La figure de l'hérisson représenté avec ses nombreuses épines pourrait mettre à l'abri les yeux de tout danger, lorsqu'il contenait le khôl pour maquiller les cils et les paupières.

استخدم الكحل لطلاء العينين، وقد كان يستخلص من الملاكيت (خام النحاس الأخضر) أو الجالين (خام الرصاص الرمادي). وكان الكحل يطحن على لوحات إردوازية منذ عصر ما قبل الأسرات، ويستخدم في طلاء العينين؛ لأغراض الزينة والصحة معا. وقد كان يحضر؛ إما في شكل كتلة عجين متماسكة - من المادة المطحونة، أو في شكل مسحوق. 

إتخذ وعاء الكحل شكل قنفذ، وهو مزود بمرود خشبي. وكانت تمتلكه سيدة بيت من عصر الدولة الحديثة، وشكل كقطعة فنية تصور هذا الحيوان. وربما تكون لشكل القنفذ بأشواكه دلالة في تصور حماية العين من الأذى؛ عندما يحتوي الوعاء على الكحل، لطلاء الرموش والأجفان.
