28th Dynasty

28th Dynasty.jpg

Under Ataxerxes II (27th Dynasty) the Egyptians rebelled against Persian control. This revolt was led by Amyrtaios (Amenirdies in Egyptian), the only king of this dynasty. The Persians gave Egypt up without a fight because they were otherwise occupied with the internal struggles between Ataxerxes and his brother Cyrus, and with the war against Sparta. According to the sources, Amyrtaios was originally acknowledged as king by all of Egypt, but eventually he was unable to withstand other pretenders to the throne (29th Dynasty).
