Haematite

Haematite.jpg

Haematite is an iron oxide. It can be various colours, of which red, brown and black are the most important. Haematite was used from predynastic times on to make beads, amulets and applicators to apply eye paint, among other things. A black, opaque type was used in these cases. In later times the red variety was frequently used for amulets because of the symbolism of this colour.
