A word for the king of Egypt derived from ancient Egyptian. The word also appears in the Hebrew text of the Bible and entered modern usage via Greek. The words 'per aa' originally meant 'the great house', referring to the king's palace, but from the New Kingdom at the latest it also meant the king himself.
