Name derived from Greek meaning '(area) between the rivers', referring to the region between the Euphrates and the Tigris, roughly corresponding to modern Iraq. In antiquity this area was controlled by Akkad and Sumer in roughly the third millennium BC, and by Babylon and Assyria in the second and first millennia BC.
